Querido Familia y Amigos: Here's what we use for almost-daily carrot salads, and by the way, the carrots are sweet! Carrot salad recipe *grated carrots *chopped fresh pineapple *chopped fresh apples *fresh chopped mandarin or navel oranges *sliced fresh kiwis *sliced bananas if you're eating the salad the same day *any other fresh fruit you have on hand or want to try *raisins or dried cranberries *mayo or Miracle Whip as a dressing, mixed in thoroughly (Add a small amount of apple cider vinegar and sugar or stevia to the mayo for more tang; Miracle Whip is fine by itself. Also try cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger to taste) Below are photos from our tour to the National Palace in downtown Guatemala City. It was Mac's fifth try to get in (wrong day, unexpected closure, too late to enter) but we finally did. Our guide in the yellow shirt spoke three languages. She was touring with her Guatemalan family (Spanish), her French husband's family (French) and she had lived in the US (English). She did rapid-fire switches as she translated for all of us. The man in blue was the palace guide and spoke only Spanish. | |
Asociacion La Alianza receives "Hands of Peace" Award at the White Rose Ceremony in the National Palace in Guatemala City
In 1996, the Peace Accords were signed and Guatemala marked a new chapter in its history, with 36 years of long Civil War finally drawn to a close. Since then, every day, a White Rose is placed in the Peace Courtyard of the National Palace, marking one more day of peace.
On September 29, 2011, in that same Peace Courtyard, the Guatemalan Secretariat for Peace, part of the Office of the President of Guatemala, held a ceremony paying homage to all boys and girls in Guatemala who have fallen victim to the crime of human trafficking and honoring the staff of Asociacion La Alianza (ALA) for their service at our safe house for trafficked girls. ALA was awarded "The Hands of Peace Award" ("Las Manos de la Paz") for their anti-trafficking work and Carolina Escobar Sarti, National Director of ALA was named "Ambassador for Peace," receiving a special brooch recognizing her outstanding work to build a culture of peace in Guatemala. She was also asked to change the White Rose of Peace that day in the courtyard as a further recognition of the work of ALA.
According to Grecia Arguilera, a Guatemalan columnist for the national newspaper La Hora, the symbolic rose ceremony is a sign that a culture of peace is possible in Guatemala, and, as the rose is changed, the dream of advancing peace is kept alive, never letting the flame of hope burn out, since it is the duty of each Guatemalan citizen to keep this fire alive.
All of our resident girls and members of ALA staff were present at the event, along with the Minister of the Interior, and representatives from the major press outlets in Guatemala. Also present were many members of the National Police, including officers who received training on human trafficking from our ALA team as part of a project that has trained more than 1,000 members of the National Police.
